A Guide to Proper Use of Calipers and Micrometers

Calipers and micrometers are the most commonly used precision measuring instruments in industrial production. Using them correctly is essential for ensuring product quality.

    Using Calipers

Calipers can measure outer diameter, inner diameter, depth and step dimensions of workpieces. Key considerations:

  1. Clean measuring surfaces before use
  2. Ensure the caliper zeroes correctly
  3. Apply appropriate pressure during measurement
  4. Keep your line of sight perpendicular to the scale

  5. Using Micrometers

Micrometers offer higher precision, typically down to 0.001mm:

  6. Use the ratchet thimble to ensure consistent measuring force
  7. Calibrate the zero position before each measurement
  8. Avoid over-tightening which may damage the workpiece

  9. Maintenance & Storage

  10. Clean after use and apply anti-rust oil
  11. Store with measuring faces slightly open to avoid prolonged contact
  12. Send for professional calibration regularly
